Surface cholesterol that is made redundant during lipoprotein metabolism, and excess tissue cholesterol, is taken up by disc-like HDL particles that are secreted from the liver and intestine. Cholesterol esters that are formed as a result of LCAT activity enter the core of the HDL particle, which then becomes spherical.
